Planting Healthier, Greener Communities
For more than three decades, Capital Roots’ Urban Greening Program has transformed neighborhoods across the Capital Region by planting thousands of trees and creating vibrant public landscapes. What began in 1989 has grown into a movement that connects people with nature right where they live.

Why Urban Greening Matters
Urban planting does far more than beautify a block. They:
Cool our cities
by providing shade and reducing energy use.
Improve air quality
and help manage stormwater.
Improve our neighborhoods
and enhance livability.
Create welcoming green spaces
that encourage community connection.
Powered by People
Each spring and fall, community volunteers, including local students, join us in planting projects across the region. Their hands-on work brings immediate change, and the care of dedicated residents ensures that trees thrive long into the future.
